See 1860 census, Benton Twp., Hocking Co., Ohio, #819 OBITUARY: - Obsequies OF JAMES SIMS, An Innovation Introduced in Funeral Appointments. Street Cars Converted Into a Burial Train - Street Railway Employees in Charge. In the funeral of James Sims, late a conductor in the employ of the Columbus Street Railroad company, which occurred yesterday afternoon, hundreds of people witnessed an innovation in the matter of funeral appointments which is becoming very popular in many eastern cities and is likely to meet with general approval here. The Columbus Street Railway Employees' Beneficial Association had charge of the arrangements and a committee composed of President B. E. Kemp and Secretary H. R. Beeson, assisted by Marion Crabtree, division superintendent of the Red line, perfected the details, which were carried out with gratifying success. Red line car No. 210 was tastefully and fittingly draped and converted into a funeral car for the solemn occasion, and in addition to this the Street Railway company kindly assigned Red line cars Nos. 238 and 162 and Blue line No. 141 to carry the friends of the deceased to Green Lawn cemetery, where the interment took place. The cars were used at the suggestion and through the courtesy of the officers of the street railway company. At 1 PM the funeral train was in waiting at the corner of High and Kossuth streets. Where a large crowd had gathered to see the first funeral of its kind ever conducted in this city. The remains of the deceased were at the South Pearl street, his late residence in a few minutes after the funeral train had been drawn up in line at High and Kossuth the casket, borne by the pallbearers and followed by the friends of the deceased, and about sixty members of the association, was placed on board and the procession started on its way to the Evangelical church, corner Ninth and Main streets, where impressive services were held. In the funeral car were the widow, three sons and a daughter of the deceased, the minister and the following gentlemen, all members of the Beneficial association who acted as pallbearers; Jacob Weaver, G. N. Wilcox, Alabama, Strader, J. F. Perry, J. H. McCormick and J. M. Hayes. The casket was passed in at one of the car windows and rested on the seats at one side. The car was in charge of conductor Owen Thomas and Motorman Joseph Fuller. Mr. Fuller was an old friend of the deceased having been his motorman for may years while the deceased was a conductor on the Min and Fourth street line. After the services at the church the procession again started and wended its way to the west gate of the cemetery by the following route: West on Main to High, north on High to Broad, West on Board to Glenwood avenue, south on Glenwood to Mound and thence west on Mound to the cemetery gate where a hearse was in waiting to convey the remains to the grave that had been prepared for it near the soldiers' circle in the beautiful city of the dead. The services at the grave were short but impressive. The members of the association formed a circle around the grave and kept back the large crowd of people that had gathered there to witness the last sad rites performed. After all was over the procession reformed and marched to the cars which were kept in waiting on a sidetrack near the gate, and all returned to the city without accident or mishap. All along the route hundreds of people stopped to gaze upon the odd sight and other hundreds went out to the cemetery out of curiosity to see how the casket would be transferred from the car to the grave. Numerous comments were heard, all of them favorable to the street railway company for the successful and impressive manner in which it conducted its part of the arrangements.
