Thomas Richard Lape, 70, of Perrysville, died Thursday afternoon in Samaritan Hospital. Thomas was born in Lancaster, Ohio to the late Thomas and Gwendolyn Lape. Tom attended Lancaster High School until the eleventh grade. He has been living in Perrysville for the last 46 years where he drove truck for Wenham Transportation for 16 years and worked for Green Township. He served the village of Perrysville from 1980 to 1995, which is when he retired from Green Township and the Perrysville Mayor position. Tom was instrumental in bringing the Step 2 Corporation to Perrysville and the new Perrysville Fire Department building. He is also credited with the development of the Perrysville Community Center and helped the village become part of the Tree City USA beautification program. After stepping down as Mayor, he served on the Perrysville Board of Affairs for some time. Tom was a long time member of the Perrysville Lions Club and the Ohio Country Western Music Association. He loved driving, golf, music, and fishing.
Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Jane Lape, whom he married on April 21, 1954, two daughters: Debbie Wise of Lancaster, and Jackie and Duane Holland of Perrysville, 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and a sister Darlene Kline of Lancaster.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, two sons: Jeffery "Bub" Lape who died on October 17, 2004, and Tommy Lape who died on December 23, 1990, and a brother Ernest "Danny" Lape.
A memorial service for Tom will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 8:00 PM in Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home with Pastor Marc Patterson officiating. Friends may call on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Perrysville Fire Department, 181 E. Third St., Perrysville, Ohio 44864. Due to Barb's illness, the family has requested that no fresh flowers or live cut flowers be sent.
